CHARLES FRIED was born in Czechoslovakia in 1935, received his A.B. degree from Princeton University and M.A. in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford. His J.D. degree is from Columbia Law School. After serving as law clerk to Justice John Marshall Harlan of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1960–61, he began teaching at Harvard Law School, where he has been ever since.
