ERNEST ANDRÉ GELLNER is a William Wys Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. He taught at the London School of Economics from 1949 to 1984, with the rank of Professor from 1962. A fellow of the British Academy since 1974 and a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1988, he is the author of Words and Things (1968), Thought and Change (1965), Saints of the Atlas (1969), Legitimisation of Belief (1974), Muslim Society (198l), Nations and Nationalism (1983), and The Psychoanalytic Movement (1985).
