ROBERT M. SOLOW is Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has been a professor of economics since 1949. He studied at Harvard University and received his Ph.D. there in 1951. He served for many years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and was chairman for three years. He is also a member of the National Science Board.
