The State and the Shaping of Identity
Kwame Anthony Appiah is professor of Afro-American studies and philosophy at Harvard University, where he is also director of undergraduate studies. He was educated at Clare College and received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Cambridge University. He is a member of the African Literature Association, the American Philosophical Association, the Aristotelian Society, and the Modern Language Association, and has been president of the Society for African Philosophy in North America and chair of the Joint Committee on African Studies of the Social Science Research Council and the American Council of Learned Societies.
