The Past, Present, and Future of the Human Family

Sarah Blaffer Hrdy is professor emeritus of anthropology at the University of California, Davis. She was educated at Radcliffe College and received her Ph.D. from Harvard University. Hrdy is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the California Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the Animal Behavior Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is past editor of the book series The Foundations of Human Behavior and serves on the editorial boards of Evolutionary Anthropology and Human Nature. Her work in primate sociobiology has led to a number of publications, including The Woman that Never Evolved (1981), a New York Times Notable Book; and Infanticide: Comparative and Evolutionary Perspectives (1984, co-edited with Glen Hausfater), a Choice Outstanding Academic Book. Her most recent book, Mother Nature: A History of Mothers, Infants, and Natural Selection (1999), was chosen by both Publishers Weekly and Library Journal as a Best Book of 1999, was a Šnalist for the PEN USA (West) 2000 Literary Award for Research NonŠction, and won the Howells Prize of the American Anthropological Association.
