J. M. COETZEE holds a chair in General Literature at the University of Cape Town. He received degrees in literature and mathematics at the University of Cape Town and received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1969. He has been a visiting professor at numerous universities, including Johns Hopkins, Harvard, and the University of Chicago.
