TIMOTHY GARTON ASH is a Senior Research Fellow in Contemporary European History at St. Antony’s College, Oxford. After reading modern history at Oxford, his research into the German resistance to Hitler took him to both the eastern and western halves of the divided city of Berlin, where he lived for several years. In 1986-87 he was a fellow of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
