On Doing Science in the Modern World
DAVID BALTIMORE was educated at Swarthmore College, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received a Ph.D. degree in Biology from the Rockefeller University in 1964. That same year he became a research associate at the Salk Institute, and in 1972, a professor of biology at MIT. He was appointed American Cancer Society Research Professor in 1973, the following year joined the staff of the MIT Center for Cancer Research, and in 1982 was named the first director of the Whitehead Institute.
