Nicholas Lemann was born and raised in New Orleans. He began his journalism career as a seventeen-year-old writer for an alternative weekly newspaper there. He graduated from Harvard College in 1976, where he was president of the Harvard Crimson. After graduation, he worked at the Washington Monthly, Texas Monthly, the Washington Post, the Atlantic Monthly, and the New Yorker, where he continues to work as a staff writer.
