ANTONIO R. DAMASIO is Maurice W. Van Allen Distinguished Professor and head of the Department of Neurology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He is also an adjunct professor at the Salk Institute in La Jolla. He was born in Portugal and received both his M.D. and his Ph.D. from the University of Lisbon.
