BERNARD LEWIS, educated at Wilson College, The Polytechnic, and the Universities of London and Paris, was a Professor of History of the Near and Middle East at the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University from 1949 to 1974. From 1974 to 1986, he was the Cleveland E. Dodge Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University (now Emeritus) and, during that period, was a member of Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Studies.
