BENJAMIN BARBER is a Gershon and Carol Kekst Professor of Civil Society and Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland. He is also a principal and director of the New York City ofŠce of the Democracy Collaborative, an international consortium of academic centers and citizen-engagement organizations working to strengthen democracy and civil society locally, nationally, and internationally.
