Susan J. Smith, FBA, Acc, FRSE, is Mistress of Girton College, Cambridge, where she is also an Honorary Professor of Geography. She was previously Professor of Geography and a director of the Institute of Advanced Study at Durham University; before that she held the Ogilvie Chair of Geography at the University of Edinburgh. She is a graduate of Oxford University (St. Anne’s and Nu¢eld Colleges) and has enjoyed visiting positions at the University of California, Los Angeles; the European University Institute; Oxford University; the Australian National University; and RMIT University, Melbourne, where she is currently an adjunct professor
