PETER BROWN is Rollins Professor of History at Princeton University. He was educated in Ireland and England, and received his degree from Oxford University in 1956, the same year he was elected to a Fellowship at All Souls’ College, Oxford. From 1975 to 1978 he was professor of history at Royal Holloway College, University of London, and from 1975 to 1978 he was professor of classics and history at the University of California, Berkeley.
