SIR FRANK KERMODE lives in Cambridge and has been Lord Northcliffe Professor and head of the department at University College, London, and King Edward VII Professor at Cambridge. He was also a Charles Eliot Norton Professor of Poetry at Harvard and Luce Professor at Yale. He was educated at Liverpool University and served in the Royal Navy during World War II.
