Islam in European Thought
ALBERT HOURANI was born in Manchester, England, in 1915 and studied at Oxford University. He taught the modern history of the Middle East at Oxford until his retirement, and is an Emeritus Fellow of St. Antony’s College and Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College. He has been a visiting professor at the American University of Beirut, the Universities of Chicago and Pennsylvania, and Harvard University, and Distinguished Fellow in the Humanities at Dartmouth College. His books include Arabic Thought in the Liberal Age (1962 ; revised edition, 1983)) Europe and the Middle East (1980), and The Emergence of the Modern Middle East (1981).
