STANLEY HOFFMANN, currently Douglas Dillon Professor of the Civilization of France at Harvard University, has also been the Chairman of the Center for European Studies there since its creation in 1969. Born in Vienna, he graduated from the Institut d’Études Politiques of Paris; he later taught there and at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales.
