JOHN EDWARD CHRISTOPHER HILL was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, where he was a Brackenbury Scholar in Modern History. He was a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, from 1934 to 1938, a Fellow and Tutor in Modern History for twenty-seven years at Balliol, and a Master of Balliol College from 1965 to 1978.
