DAVID GAUTHIER is a native Torontonian now resident in Pittsburgh. He was educated at the University of Toronto, Harvard University, and the University of Oxford. From 1958 to 1980 he was a member of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto, rising from Lecturer through the ranks to Professor and becoming Chairman in 1974. He is now a Professor of Philosophy, Senior Fellow in the Center for Philosophy of Science, and Chairman of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1979 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
