S. N. EISENSTADT is Professor of Sociology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he has been a faculty member since 1946. He has served as visiting professor at numerous universities, including Harvard, Stanford, M.I.T., Chicago, Michigan, Washington, Oslo, Zurich, and Vienna.
