BRIAN BARRY was born in London in 1936. He read philosophy, politics, and economics at Oxford and also received the D.Phi1. there for a thesis written under the supervision of H. L. A. Hart. Before crossing the Atlantic in 1975, he held positions in a number of English universities, including, latterly, those of Professor of Government at the University of Essex and Official Fellow of Nuffield College.
